POAC Over the Years
Since its inception in 1971 in Trondheim, Norway, the International Conference on Port and Ocean Engineering under Arctic Conditions (POAC) has been held every two years in different locations across the world. The conference aims to tackle unique ice-related problems applicable to coastal and offshore engineering in the Arctic and Antarctic. The conference serves as a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas between national and international organizations, industries, research institutes and individuals working on ice engineering, and has gained a loyal following over the years.
About POAC 2019
Delft University of Technology is proud to welcome POAC to the Netherlands for the first time. The 25th International Conference on Port and Ocean Engineering under Arctic Conditions (POAC) will be hosted by the sections Offshore Engineering and Dynamics of Solids & Structures at Delft University of Technology. The ice engineering themes that will be considered during POAC 2019 include ice-structure interaction, Arctic navigation and icing, effects of climate change, ISO19906, offshore wind developments, ice-induced vibrations, results from Polar expeditions and many more. In addition to the main sessions, our guests will be treated to a welcome party, technical tours and a gala banquet, in and around the beautiful city of Delft.
The Netherlands and their citizens
The Netherlands is probably known to most as a very small country at the west coast of Europe. Still, with 17 million people it is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. “Netherlands” literally means “lower country”, referring to its low land and flat geography, with only about half of its land exceeding 1 meter (3 ft. 3 in.) above sea water level. Although the sea is a constant threat to the country, it provides the Netherlands with beautiful beaches and dune areas along the coast. Another highlight of the Netherlands are beautiful cities dating back to the ages of the Roman Empire. Must-sees are, among others, Amsterdam, Haarlem, Maastricht, Den Haag, Utrecht, Leiden and not to forget, Delft. The second largest city in the Netherlands is Rotterdam, which is only a 10 min train ride from Delft. This city has, unlike the old cities, a very modern city center, as the old center was destroyed in WOII. You are very welcome to enjoy the best our country has to offer.
The Dutch are known for being very tall, very direct, pretty greedy (probably where the proverb “going Dutch” comes from) and open minded. Also, nearly every Dutch person owns a bike, as it is to many their primary mean of transportation. To get a real Dutch experience a bike ride is very much recommended. Furthermore, almost everyone speaks at least some English and often people even speak a third language. Getting around will therefore not be a problem. Lastly, every Dutch person goes crazy when it happens to be an arctic winter in The Netherlands. Everyone dusts off their ice skates to enjoy the rare sunny winter days on the ice. Unfortunately, in June the chance to experience one of these days is very small.
